My Father’s World Ancient History and Literature Week One

Last week Stargirl completed her first week of school. We started a week earlier than public schools in our area, as we wanted to get a good routine going, before adding in band, charter school campus classes, and meetings with Stargirl’s educational specialist.

Stargirl did the first week of My Father’s World Ancient History and Literature as written. I am doing Taking the Old Testament Challenge with Stargirl. It’s a great way to study and discuss the Bible together.

For Bible Stargirl read Genesis 1-3, as well as background information from Journey Through the Bible. The questions from Taking the Old Testament Challenge were thought provoking. These aren’t questions that can be answered quickly. They take a great deal of thought, which is a good thing. I have a feeling that by the time this year is over, Stargirl and I are both going to understand the Old Testament in a new way.

In history Stargirl read a bit from Exploring World History by Ray Notgrass. The subjects covered were a basic introduction to creation. She also read quite a bit of The New Answers Book by Answers in Genesis. I’m excited that Stargirl is learning about evidence for creation, as the biology text she is using this year promotes evolution. This will be a good exercise in worldview.

Finally, in literature Stargirl wrote her first argumentative paper. I had her read Was it Heaven? Or Hell? by Mark Twain. She needed to read a short story for her charter school, and this seemed like a thought provoking story. For her paper, Stargirl argued that the sisters in Twain’s story went to heaven. She did a great job! She has also chosen to read Pilgrim’s Progress during her required reading time.

I know we’re just a week in, but I am loving My Father’s World Ancient History and Literature! This is going to be a fantastic year of learning to defend the Christian worldview. Unfortunately, Stargirl won’t get credit for a lot of the work through the charter school, since it’s a public school. However, this is a good lesson in learning because it’s important, rather than studying for a grade.

Stargirl seems to be enjoying the curriculum, too, though she isn’t enjoying the time it takes to do her work. In that sense, high school is going to be a tough adjustment for her. Her school days are going to be much longer than before.

Now we’re on to week 2! This week we’re adding band at the public high school, biology, and algebra. It’s going to be a busy week, and I can’t wait to get started! I love homeschooling high school!

  1. Sounds like you’ve got a great school plan going, Lynnae! I think it was a great idea that you started a week early with some of the subjects. Kelsi’s going to be reading The New Answers Book by Answers in Genesis starting tomorrow, too. She loves schoolwork (strange girl!!!), so she is actually looking forward to longer school days. Ha! I don’t think Brittany is looking forward to it quite as much…but she is much more “normal” in that area. !!!

  2. I just found your blog while googling MFW Ancient History. Our daughter is using this curriculum this year also, while attending public high school for Biology, Algebra, French, and Choir! Sounds like we have a lot in common! I will start following your blog, it will be great to be in contact with someone who can relate :)

  3. I found your blog when I googled “high school homeschool.” :) My oldest is only starting 8th grade this year, but this is our last year with our current curriculum. So, on top of trying to find an entirely new curriculum (or pieces of different ones), I’m facing him starting high school. Which terrifies me, lol. I think I have just let the way too many people who have said to me “what about high school…surely you aren’t going to homeschool through high school are you?” get to me. :/

Since I over research and over analyze everything, I know it’s going to take me a year to begin to feel like I’m ready, lol. I’m glad I have found blogs like yours, and online communities like the one at, to find resources and encouragement! :)

Thanks so much for sharing, and I’m looking forward to checking back in with you! :)
