TOS Review: Apologia Who Is God?

I am so happy to be reviewing Who Is God? by Apologia! While perusing the Apologia website earlier this year, I came across the What We Believe series, and I thought it sounded like something I would one day like to work into our homeschool. Boy was I surprised when the first book in the series was offered for review to the TOS Crew. And of course I was thrilled to be selected.

Was the study all I expected it to be? Did it disappoint? Keep reading!

About Apologia Who Is God

The What We Believe Series is a biblical worldview course geared toward students ages 6-14. The series consists of four volumes (two of which are released already, and two which will be released in the future). The first volume, the one which I reviewed, is Who Is God? And Can I Really Know Him?

Who Is God? consists of ten lessons, which explain who God is. Lessons include

  • Where am I building my life?
  • How can I know what’s true?
  • What is God like? (Part 1)
  • What is God like? (Part 2)
  • Who are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit?
  • If God created the world, why isn’t it perfect?
  • Why did God create me?
  • Will God meet all my needs?
  • Why does sin keep me from knowing God?
  • Is Jesus the only way to God?

The goal is to get children thinking from a biblical worldview at a young age, so they are able to recognize the difference between God’s truth and lies from today’s world.

Other books in the series are Who Am I?, Who is My Brother? (to be released this year), and What on Earth Can I Do? (to be released in 2012).

Our Experience with Apologia’s Who Is God?

When I received Who Is God?, I was immediately impressed by the appearance of the book. It is attractive, and each chapter is separated into well-defined sections. If you’ve ever used any of the Apologia Elementary science books, it’s very similar in size and layout.

We decided to do lessons together three times a week. I was a bit skeptical that a single study could hold the attention of both my 7th grader and my 3rd grader, as other studies we’ve tried to do together have flopped. They either tend to be too hard for my younger child or two easy for my older.

Apologia offers a sample schedule to follow, but we ignored it. We also ignored the notebooking, as my kids are not big fans of notebooking. I wanted our worldview study to be more like an easy-going conversation than a regimented schedule. So instead of following a schedule and notebooking suggestions, we just took Who Is God? into the living room, sat on the couch, and read and discussed until the kids got bored.

Our easygoing approach worked really well for our family. The lessons in Who is God? are very thought provoking, and both kids always made insightful comments and asked thought provoking questions during our study time. We found that the lessons held the attention of both of my children.

Our Who Is God? study has truly become one of my favorite aspects of homeschooling this year. I don’t feel like I’m teaching. The kids enjoy the lesson material, and I enjoy listening to their insights. Over the last month, we’ve had some deep discussions about our worldview as Christians. These are times I really treasure. I will definitely be continuing the series when we’re finished with this book.

The Low-Down on Who is God? by Apologia

The Pros:

  • Appeals to a wide variety of ages
  • Written in a way young students can understand
  • Lessons are thought provoking, even to an adult
  • Free notebooking pages are available on the Apologia website for those who want to use them
  • Teacher helps, such as discussion questions, are also available on the website
  • Lessons can easily be customized to suit your family’s needs
  • Very effective in teaching children to think from a biblical perspective
  • Reasonably priced

The Cons:

  • The suggested schedule is a little bit confusing. It’s not hard to make your own schedule, though.

My Overall Opinion: If you haven’t guessed, I really, REALLY loved Who Is God? by Apologia. Sometimes I know what I want my kids to learn, when it comes to having a biblical worldview, but I don’t know how to explain it in a way they can understand. Apologia has taken care of that for me. It teaches what I want my kids to learn in a way they can comprehend. In addition, Who is God? encourages and challenges me to examine my own worldview and make note of areas where I’m not living as biblically as I’d like.
