Have you ever found yourself in need of extra income?
Maybe you need extra money for Christmas. Perhaps you’d like to take you kids to Disneyland. Or maybe your husband lost his job, and you’re struggling to make ends meet.
I found myself in the last situation in April 2016. After my husband lost his job, we struggled to get by for a year. And then I found the best job I’ve ever had!
I’m not kidding about that statement!
WORK FROM HOME WITH VIPKID
It was late one night last March. We didn’t know if we were going to be able to pay our bills in April. In desperation I was searching Indeed.com for a job…any job for which I might qualify.
That’s when I saw it. “K-6 Online ESL Teacher – VIPKID.”
I was intrigued. How do you teach English as a second language from home? I clicked.
The requirements were simple:
- A Bachelor’s degree. In anything.
- One year of teaching experience – not necessarily as a classroom teacher.
- A North American accent.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. I homeschooled my children for five years. I volunteer in the children’s program at church. And I’m a native English speaker.
I was a little concerned, as the company, VIPKID, is a Chinese company. But I was more desperate than concerned, so I applied.
Almost immediately I received an automated email inviting me to interview.
And the rest is history. I’ve been teaching almost full time with VIPKID for nearly six months. I just signed my second contract, and my experience has been wonderful!
WHY WORK FROM HOME WITH VIPKID?
The benefits of contracting with VIPKID are many.
A FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE
I set my own availability with VIPKID. There are no minimum required number of classes you need to teach. If I want to take a weekend off, I don’t open classes on the weekend. If I want to take a week’s vacation, I don’t schedule classes.
At the same time, I can work as much as I want. Most of the time I work 35-40 hours a week. I work all night (because that’s daytime in China), but I’m a night owl anyway. I sleep while my kids are in school. Some teachers teach for an hour or two before heading to their classroom jobs. My schedule is what I make it.
THE TEACHING COMMUNITY
There are many, many VIPKID teachers – around 20,000. There is a Facebook community for everyone – Christians, teachers over 40, teachers who like to use technology in their classrooms, teachers who make their own props. Whatever information or support I’m looking for, I can always find it. Other teachers are so helpful!
VIPKID also provides their own community forum – The Hutong. It’s still in its infancy, but I think it will eventually become a great resource for all teachers!
BONUSES AND INCENTIVES
Many months VIPKID offers bonuses for teaching a certain amount of classes or teaching during certain time periods. Sometimes there are contests to win a trip to Beijing! (I sure hope I win next time!)
Not all bonuses apply to all people, but they sure are fun when they apply to you!
A GREAT CULTURAL EDUCATION
I have learned more about Chinese culture on this job than I ever learned in school! I knew Chinese kids spent a lot of time in school, but I had no idea how much time! I knew a little bit about China, but through my students, I’ve actually been to Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. And I’ve been able to bring a little bit of America to my students!
Seriously the greatest benefit of working with VIPKID is the kids. I never knew I could grow to love students I’ve never physically met, but it is inevitable. Some kids I see once, some kids I see once a month, and some kids I see every week. The bonds that develop with my regular students are incredible.
Currently I’m reading Harry Potter with one student (not in class…we just talk about the book when we have a chance). I enjoy hangman games with another. And another student reminds me of my own daughter so much it’s uncanny. Each student is unique, and I love experiencing the moment when a light comes on and the student learns something new. There’s just nothing like it.
Because of this job, our finances are back to where they were before my husband lost his job. And I work a job that doesn’t feel like a job. In fact, today was supposed to be my day off, but I opened a few classes anyway. I can’t seem to sleep in these days. And this morning I met five more incredible students!
VIPKID has truly blessed me.

The application process for VIPKID can be daunting. I’d love to help you through it.
The process includes:

- The first Mock Class
- The second Mock class
The hiring process is actually much more difficult than the actual teaching. That’s why it’s important to have some help throughout the process.
